Traffic Engineering & Sustainable Transport Planning

The Traffic Engineering and Sustainable Transport Planning Team at Ratio undertakes projects in the following areas:

Road network planning

Ratio carries out arterial road corridor studies for State Road Authorities such as VicRoads.  It also undertakes traffic forecasting for road networks in new urban development areas for Councils, VicUrban and private developers.

Traffic system planning and design

Ratio assists Councils and private developers in the planning and design of traffic facilities, both for upgrading existing systems and for new systems.  This work often includes detailed design of traffic signal systems for urban arterial intersections.

Traffic impact assessment

Much of Ratio’s work is preparing Traffic Impact Reports to accompany town planning applications for developments including residential, commercial, industrial, educational, sporting/recreation and major public/private institutional uses such as hospitals, schools, aged care, child care centres and student accommodation.

Local area traffic management

Ratio assists local Councils in the preparation of Local Area Traffic Management schemes to address traffic safety and amenity concerns in residential areas, and around sensitive land uses such as local schools, child care centres and kindergartens.

Construction traffic management plans

Ratio Consultants has been involved in some extremely complicated road and lane closure proposals for works on roads around Melbourne.  We have an extremely good reputation for obtaining VicRoads approvals for our Traffic Management Schemes.  We have prepared Traffic Management Schemes for roadworks, underground power cable installation works, tram tracks works, drainage works and public events, covering some of Melbourne’s busiest roadways.

Road safety

Ratio carries out road safety research and planning, ranging from the preparation of Municipal Road Safety Strategies (for over twenty Victorian Councils) to Road Safety Audits for road works, and proposed development sites.

Public transport

As part of broader projects, Ratio plans new and improved bus and tram facilities associated with new development.  On a more strategic level, our integrated transport strategies place a strong emphasis on public transport modes.

Car parking, planning and management

Ratio prepares Parking Precinct Plans for Councils, assesses parking uses for new developments and assists Architects and Civil Engineers in the planning and design of at-grade and multi-storey car parks.

Bicycle and pedestrian facilities

Ratio has designed and assessed bicycle and pedestrian facilities, generally as part of broader road safety projects.  We have experience in Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliance, and routinely ensure the special needs of pedestrians are considered in the design detail.

Green travel plans

Ratio has a range of experience in developing green travel plans for schools, workplaces and development sites.  We work with our clients (both public and private) to determine the best approach in achieving sustainable transport outcomes and a reduction in single occupant vehicle trips.

Road network design

Ratio Consultants has significant experience in the design of residential and industrial subdivisions particularly with regards to road network design and road hierarchy development.  Ratio has assisted private developers and Council within Melbourne and Regional Victoria on such projects as:
the Deer Park Industrial Estate – a 194 ha industrial subdivision;
Torquay Residential Subdivision – a 460 conventional lot subdivision in Torquay: and
Nunawading Residential Subdivision – a 50 lot residential subdivision consisting of conventional residential allotments and medium density lots.

VCAT and re-zoning panel representation

Ratio’s Traffic Team has assisted Local Councils private developers and objectors by providing independent expert evidence for a vast range of projects before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) and at Rezoning Panel Hearings both in Victoria and interstate.
