New Principal-Head of Urban Design: Craig Gillette

We’re delighted to announce the appointment of Craig Gillette as Principal – Head of our Urban Design team. Craig brings expertise and experience gained from over 25 years of working in both the private and public sectors.

For the first half of his career, Craig worked with some of Australia’s leading architectural firms as principal designer on projects of state significance ranging across commercial and educational sectors as well as significant urban renewal projects. For the past fifteen years, he has specialised in urban design, driving urban strategy, improvement and policy at both local and state government levels, working with the Victorian State Government in leadership roles designing, advocating and negotiating for public benefit and urban realm design quality. His major achievements include delivering the Southbank Plan, strategic technical input into the Better Apartment Design Standards, shaping the Southbank Cultural Spine, the Batman’s Hill Redevelopment Plan and specialist advice into Melbourne Metropolitan Rail Project (MMRP).

This diverse experience provides Craig with a detailed understanding of the matrix of issues that trigger referrals to VCAT, and how to expedite projects for more timely and effective planning outcomes. In Government, Craig was valued by leading architects for his constructive, solutions-oriented input, that improved outcomes positively.

His inspiration to pursue a career in architecture and urban design originates from his childhood, “I had the opportunity to live in several culturally diverse neighbourhoods in my childhood, with different ways of living in different housing types. This generated an interest in the whole notion of housing people in different ways. I believe every architectural artefact has a responsibility not just to achieve the commercial and project goals, but also to positively respond and contribute to its context. I have developed the skills to facilitate this, which improves outcomes at all levels for all parties.”

Craig’s insightful, strategic advice is valued by planners, architects and developers alike, as it is grounded in a real understanding of the delivery of complex and ambitious projects of all types.  This is complimented by his knowledge and experience in generating and advocating for design and development proposals, knowledge of procurement methodologies, comprehensive understanding of the approvals processes, and awareness of commercial drivers positions him as a valued contributor in achieving positive urban outcomes.

Craig’s leadership skills and experience strengthen our growing urban design and planning teams, providing creative and tactical input to better planning outcomes enriching the diversity of our offering.
