2017 in Reflection

It’s been yet another exciting year at ratio: and with the end of 2017 in sight, this will be our last newsletter for the year.

2017 has seen numerous changes to the Victorian Planning Provisions and we have been working tirelessly to absorb and interpret the changes to ensure we can best advise our clients on their projects. Some of the most substantial changes we have seen over the year include the removal of the two-dwelling limit in the Neighbourhood Residential Zone, as well as new mandatory height limits and garden area requirements in the Neighbourhood and General Residential Zones. The introduction of BADS has also sought to provide clearer guidance on the design of apartments across Melbourne with mixed feedback from the industry, particularly about what the guidelines didn’t say. These provisions were introduced to provide guidance for residential developments and much of 2017 has been spent understanding the implications that they will have for our clients‘ projects.

With activity centre pilot programs being rolled out across activity centres and the VPP reform currently underway, 2018 will no doubt see further changes for the industry to grapple with.

Our involvement with Melbourne Metro and other key transport infrastructure investments is a testament to the skill and expertise of our Traffic engineers. They have further diversified their service offerings in 2017 with our work in Precinct Structure Plans and the growth of new greenfield sites second to none. Our Waste Management team has provided advice on a multitude of large, complex projects throughout the year, highlighting that consideration of waste issues needs to happen at the beginning of a project. We are proud of the tailored approach and site-specific advice our team takes for these projects.

Our team continues to grow, with more than 55 staff as the year ends. Our suite of services has also expanded and now includes planning, traffic, waste management and urban design. We are pleased to have been involved in iconic Melbourne projects as such as Nightingale and Capitol Grand, and look forward to continuing our role as thought leaders.

We take this opportunity to thank all our clients and colleagues for their support throughout the year, and we look forward to working with you in the 2018.

Wishing you and your family a safe and happy Christmas.
